Family Pass

A family pass includes various benefits and discounts for

• leisure-oriented services (for example, free admission to the municipal swimming pool or discounts at local stores),
• cultural services (e.g. cheaper admission to museums),
• education-related services (e.g. subsidies for adult education courses or school trips),
• travel on local public transport,
• municipal fees (e.g. for refuse collection),
• home ownership (e.g. discounts on the purchase of municipal building plots).

Each town or municipality adapts the benefits offered with the Family Pass to its region. These can therefore differ throughout Germany and from region to region. Find out more directly from your town or municipality. For many discounts, for example when shopping, the Family Pass must be presented together with an identity card at the checkout. It is therefore best to carry the card with you in your wallet.

You must apply for the family pass yourself. If the region in which you live offers a family pass, you can often do this directly online or in person at your local citizens' office, residents' registration office or youth welfare office. You will need an identity card or passport for this. Find out in advance whether you meet the requirements for applying for a family pass in your region and submit the necessary documents and evidence with your application.

You do not normally have to meet a deadline. The processing time online can take several days. If you apply for a family passport in person, it will usually be issued immediately. If you lose your Family Pass, contact the office that issued it. The city or municipality decides whether the card will be reissued if it is lost.

In addition to your identity card or passport, you will often need to provide further documents and proof with your application for the family pass. The Citizens' Registration Office, Residents' Registration Office or Youth Welfare Office will then ensure that you are entitled to the benefit. The exact documents required vary from region to region. For example, this may be a certificate from the health insurance fund for each child entitled to child benefit or proof of child benefit. If you and your family are in a special life situation or phase, you must be able to prove this. Depending on your personal situation, this can be done, for example, with a notification of receipt of care allowance, a certificate of severe disability for disabled relatives or a current proof of income. Contact your city or municipality directly to find out about the specific requirements in your region.

Changes in your personal situation that affect your entitlement to the family pass (for example, the discontinuation of child benefit payments) must be reported to the municipal administration independently.
