In a nutshell

If you have rent arrears and are unable to pay them off on your own, the social services office may, under certain conditions, cover your rent arrears.

The purpose of covering rent arrears is to protect you from losing your apartment. You can apply for this assistance in writing or online. It is usually paid to you as a loan.

Am I eligible?

Whether a person is eligible for assistance with rent arrears is always determined on a case-by-case basis by the social services office after reviewing the specific circumstances. You can submit an application if you have rent arrears and are therefore facing a notice of termination or an eviction lawsuit.

There is no legal entitlement to this benefit.

Required Documents

The following documents are required for the application:

  • Application for Payment of Rent Arrears
  • Current statement of claims/rental account statement
  • Reminder notice/notice of termination/eviction lawsuit
  • Lease agreement or other proof of the rent due; if applicable, rent certification
  • Utility bill

Deadlines

There are no deadlines to meet when applying for assistance with overdue rent.

That's how long it takes

Once you have submitted all the necessary documents to the social services office in person or online, it may take several weeks before you receive a response.

These costs are incurred

There is no cost to you for applying to have your rent arrears covered.
