Who is eligible for addiction counseling?

To determine whether an addiction is present, there is a specific definition from the World Health Organization (WHO).

For this, at least three of the following criteria must have occurred in a person during the last 12 months:

  1. A strong desire or perceived compulsion to consume addictive substances.
  2. Diminished ability to control the initiation, cessation or amount of drug use.
  3. Physical withdrawal symptoms when drug use is stopped or reduced.
  4. Increasing doses of the drug are required to produce the original desired effect.
  5. Progressive neglect of other pleasures or interests in favor of drug use and increased time spent using or recovering from the consequences.
  6. Continued use despite evidence of harmful consequences.
