Many German cities and municipalities offer families voluntary financial relief, the so-called family pass. This enables low-income households to participate in social and cultural life in their region.

The Family Pass gives you a wide range of discounts and benefits for leisure and educational activities. This allows you and especially your children to regularly participate in social, cultural and community life in your region.

Important Facts

Many cities and municipalities voluntarily offer additional financial relief for all families who wish to take advantage of it with the family pass (also known as the family card or city pass for families). For example, the family pass gives you a wide range of discounts and benefits for leisure and educational activities. This allows you and especially your children to regularly participate in social, cultural and community life in your region.

The offer is particularly aimed at large families, single parents or families affected by unemployment or disability.

In most cases, the family pass is a municipal instrument and is only valid in the region in which it was issued. However, there are also state family passes that are valid within an entire federal state. As a rule, the family pass must be applied for at the town or municipality itself.

In certain cities and municipalities, you may have to meet additional requirements (e.g. a certain number of children under the age of 18) or submit certain proof (e.g. child benefit certificate) in order to apply for the family pass.

You are entitled to the family pass if you

Are a family with a higher number of children for whom you receive child benefit.
Are in a special life situation, for example as a single parent or as a family with dependent or disabled relatives.
Receive one of the following benefits:
Are in a special phase of life - this includes, for example, older parents or guardians, those doing alternative or military service, children, teenagers and young adults in school, training or studying.

The family pass is often awarded regardless of income.

You are not entitled to the Family Pass if you

Do not live in a region where the Family Pass is valid.
Do not meet the specific requirements (e.g. a certain number of children under the age of 18) of the city or municipality.
Are unable to submit the necessary proof (e.g. notification of child benefit).
Do not inform the municipal administration of changes in your personal situation that could affect your entitlement, such as the discontinuation of child benefit payments.
