Short and sweet
If you do not have German citizenship and also do not belong to an EU member state and are staying in Germany, you can receive benefits under the Asylum-Seekers' Benefits Act (AsylbLG) under certain conditions. You can apply for benefits under the AsylbLG in principle if your disposable income and assets have been used up or are insufficient to live on and you do not receive any benefits under the German Social Code.

Procedure
You can apply for benefits under the AsylbLG informally. Nevertheless, you should also arrange a personal appointment for a consultation with your responsible office. Please take all the necessary documents with you to the appointment.
How it works:
Do I have a claim?
You are entitled to benefits under the AsylbLG if you meet the following requirements:

If you wish to apply for benefits under the AsylbLG, you must submit the following documents:
- Completed application
- Proof of current residence document (e.g. passport, residence permit, tolerated stay)

Deadlines
You can receive benefits from the month in which you submit your application.
If your authority sets you a deadline, you must adhere to it. If this is not possible for (understandable) reasons, you can apply for an extension of the deadline. Otherwise, you may not receive any benefits because you have not complied with your statutory obligations to cooperate.

That's how long it takes
The processing time for your application varies depending on the individual case.
The competent authority will endeavor to inform you as quickly as possible.
It is therefore important that you submit your documents in full.

These costs arise
Applying for benefits under the AsylbLG is free of charge for you.
