The key points in a nutshell.

Medication addiction is a serious illness that can have a profound impact on the lives of those affected and their loved ones. There are numerous prescription drugs in Germany that can be addictive. If these are taken regularly over a long period of time, they can lead to symptoms that are typical of addiction. Around 4 to 5 percent of all prescribed medicines, especially sleeping pills and tranquillizers, are addictive in the long term if used incorrectly. In most cases, drug dependency develops slowly and gradually.

If you think that you or someone close to you is suffering from a medication addiction, addiction counseling can help. Those affected and relatives can find information and support to help them see and follow the path out of medication addiction. The experts at all counseling centers offer discreet, empathetic and professional advice. They also provide a safe space to discuss problems that arise or are exacerbated by addiction.

Both those affected and concerned relatives are equally welcome. Relatives can find additional information in the section for relatives.

Important: The experts with whom you have contact in the addiction counseling service are bound by legal confidentiality. If you wish, counseling can also take place completely anonymously.

Who is eligible for addiction counseling?

A self-test for drug dependency can provide initial indications of whether a dependency could be present. Here are some questions that can be asked in this context.

If you answer yes to one or more of these questions, you should seek professional help.

  1. Do you feel that you need your medication to feel good or function normally?
  2. Are you taking medication more frequently or in higher doses than originally prescribed?
  3. Have you ever tried to reduce your consumption and failed?
  4. Do you spend a lot of time acquiring, taking or recovering from medication?
  5. Have you ever had problems with interpersonal relationships or at work because of your medication use?
  6. Do you take medication even though you know that it causes or worsens health problems?

Please note: A self-test cannot replace a medical diagnosis. If you notice any signs of addiction, contact a doctor or a counseling center.
