The most important facts in brief

Medication addiction is a serious illness that can have a profound impact on the lives of those affected and their loved ones. There are numerous prescription drugs in Germany that can be addictive. If they are taken regularly over a long period of time, this can lead to symptoms that are typical of addiction. Around 4 to 5 percent of all prescribed medicines, especially sleeping pills and tranquillizers, are addictive in the long term if used incorrectly. In most cases, drug addiction develops slowly and insidiously.

If you think that you or someone close to you is suffering from a drug addiction, addiction counseling can help. Those affected and relatives can find information and support to see and follow the path out of drug addiction. The experts at all counseling centers offer discreet, empathetic and professional advice. They also provide a safe space to discuss problems that arise or are exacerbated by addiction.

Affected and concerned relatives are equally welcome. Relatives can find further information in the specific area for relatives.

Important: The people with whom you have contact in the context of drug counseling are subject to the legal duty of confidentiality.

Who is eligible for addiction counseling?

A self-test for drug dependence can provide an initial indication of whether dependence may be present. Here are some questions that can be asked in this context.

If you answer yes to one or more of these questions, you should seek professional help.

  1. Do you feel like you need your medication to feel good or function normally?
  2. Do you take medications more frequently or in higher doses than originally prescribed?
  3. Have you ever tried to reduce your use and failed?
  4. Do you spend a lot of time acquiring, taking or recovering from medication use?
  5. Have you ever had problems in interpersonal relationships or at work because of your medication intake?
  6. Do you take medication even though you know that it causes or worsens health problems?

Please note: A self-test cannot replace a medical diagnosis. If you notice any signs of addiction, contact a doctor or a counseling center.
