Don't have health insurance but need medical care? This is where Hilfe zur Gesundheit can step in.

Important Facts

Health assistance - also known as health aid - is the health insurance cover provided by the social welfare office. The social welfare office can cover costs incurred for health services and medical care.

This is the case if you receive social welfare benefits on a long-term basis (longer than one month) and are not a member of a statutory health insurance scheme or have sufficient private insurance. You will then be treated in the same way as those with statutory health insurance and will be covered by a health insurance fund of your choice. This means that you can claim benefits from the statutory health insurance benefits catalog.

Your responsible social welfare office will check your entitlement to health assistance.

Please note:

Treatment without health insurance

It may be that the healthcare services you require are not covered by health insurance. This is the case if you do not have health insurance and only receive short-term (usually less than one month) assistance to cover your living expenses or only require counseling and preventive services. You will then receive a treatment certificate from the social welfare office before any medical treatment.

Important: Emergency treatment or treatment on Sundays and public holidays is also possible without a treatment certificate.
