Important Facts

Vocational training allowance (BAB) helps you to cover your living costs if you are unable to live with your parents during your training. This may be the case, for example, if your training place is too far away from your parents' home or if you already have your own family and household.

As a rule, you can only receive vocational training allowance for your first training course. However, in exceptional cases and under strict conditions, this is also possible for your second training course - even if you have already completed your first course.

Vocational training allowance, or BAB for short, is a benefit that does not have to be repaid.

Note: You can also receive vocational training assistance for pre-vocational training measures (BVB) and in the pre-training phase of assisted training (AsA).

Who is eligible?

You can receive a vocational training allowance if

  • you are completing vocational training that is eligible for support
  • you are not living with your parents during your training
  • you cannot raise the necessary funds to cover your living expenses

Even if you are not a German citizen, you are generally entitled to a vocational training allowance. However, this does not apply if you have been in Germany for less than 15 months without interruption and have been permitted, authorized or tolerated.

You cannot receive a vocational training grant if

  • your training is not eligible for funding
  • you are not a German national and have been in Germany for less than 15 months without interruption and are permitted, authorized or tolerated.
