All families receive Child benefit, regardless of how much they earn.

The most important facts in brief

All families receive child benefit, regardless of how much they earn. Child benefit is paid at least until a child's 18th birthday.

You must apply for child benefit yourself. You currently receive €255 per month. You do not pay income tax on the Child benefit.

Note: Child benefit is payable for a child from the day it is born. However, payment is only made after you have submitted an application to the family benefits office. You will need your tax identification number and that of your child for the application.

Who is entitled?

In principle, all parents or legal guardians (under certain conditions this also applies to stepchildren, grandchildren, adopted or foster children) with German citizenship and residence in Germany receive Child benefit if

  • their child is under 18 years of age.
  • Your child is domiciled or habitually resident in Germany or another member state of the European Union or in a state to which the Agreement on the European Economic Area applies (the nationality of the child is irrelevant here).
  • Your child has a tax identification number.

In certain cases, Child benefit is also paid for adult children if:

  • Proof of school education, university studies, company-based vocational training, lack of a job or training place, internship, voluntary service or a mental, physical or psychological disability is presented for your child.
  • After the age of 25, proof is provided that your child has a physical, mental or psychological disability that occurred before their 25th birthday and that they are unable to support themselves.

You can also receive Child benefit in Germany if you are a citizen of another country and meet one of the following requirements:

  • You are an EU citizen or a citizen of the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
  • You are a citizen of a third country and have a valid settlement permit that allows you to live and work in Germany.
  • You are an indisputably recognized refugee or person entitled to asylum.
.

You are not entitled to Child benefit if you

  • Your adult child drops out of school or vocational training or interrupts their studies;
  • If your adult child works after completing their first vocational training or studies and works more than 20 hours a week.
