All families receive child benefit, regardless of how much they earn. It is intended to secure the basic needs of a child from birth.

Important Facts

If you have children, you also have more expenses. This is because you have to pay for the upkeep and education of your children. To compensate for these additional costs, there is child benefit. All families receive child benefit, regardless of how much they earn. It is intended to ensure a child's basic needs are met from birth. Child benefit is paid at least until a child turns 18 and at most until their 25th birthday.

You must apply for child benefit yourself. You currently receive at least €250 per month. This corresponds to the minimum requirement for maintenance, care and education for one child. You do not pay income tax on child benefit.

Note: A child is entitled to child benefit from the day it is born. However, payment is only made after you have submitted a written application to the family benefits office. You will need your tax identification number and that of your child for the application.

In principle, all parents and legal guardians who are German nationals and resident in Germany receive child benefit if

  • Your child is under 18 years old.
  • Your child is resident or ordinarily resident in Germany (the nationality of the child is irrelevant).
  • You look after your child regularly and it lives in your household (under certain conditions this also applies to stepchildren, grandchildren, adopted or foster children).
  • Your child has a tax identification number.

In certain cases, child benefit is also paid for children over the age of 18 if:

  • Proof of school education, university studies, in-company vocational training, lack of a job or training place, internship, voluntary service or a mental, physical or psychological disability is provided for your child after their 18th birthday.
  • After the age of 25, proof is submitted that your child has a physical, mental or psychological disability that occurred before their 25th birthday and that they are unable to support themselves.

You can also receive child benefit in Germany if you are a citizen of another country and meet one of the following requirements:

  • You are an EU citizen or have the nationality of Great Britain, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
  • You are a citizen of Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Morocco, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia or Turkey and are employed in Germany and subject to social insurance contributions or receive unemployment benefit.
  • You are a citizen of a third country and have a valid settlement permit that allows you to live and work in Germany.
  • You are an incontestably recognized refugee or person entitled to asylum.

You are not entitled to child benefit if you

  • Do not inform us after the 18th birthday if your child changes, drops out of, ends or interrupts his/her school or vocational training or studies; has already completed vocational training or studies and is now taking up gainful employment; was previously registered as a jobseeker and is now taking up school or vocational training, studies or gainful employment; is doing voluntary military service or is pregnant.
  • Do not report changes such as a new address or bank details, separation or divorce, change of household, taking up public employment for more than 6 months, taking up employment abroad, reporting missing or the death of yourself or a child.
  • Apply for child benefit retroactively, but the requirements for this were not met during this period.
  • As a parent or legal guardian, you do not pay maintenance to your child who lives in his/her own household and has not submitted a "diversion application" for child benefit to the family benefits office.
  • If the child works after his/her 18th birthday and after completing his/her first vocational training or first degree and works more than 20 hours a week.
